Baby Mattresses. Which one to choose?

Babies spend a lot of time in bed, all the more important is a good mattress. The cot is initially the most important piece of furniture in the child’s room. To ensure that your child sleeps safely and quietly and that growth and posture are optimally supported, you should buy a good baby bed mattress.

What is a baby mattress for a cot?

Newborns sleep up to 18 hours a day, older babies still spend 15 hours a day in bed. For this reason, the mattress must be optimally adapted to the child’s anatomy. Mattresses for the baby bed differ from adult mattresses primarily in the smaller thickness and the smaller format. Some models have a tread edge so that the child’s foot is not trapped between the bed frame and the mattress.

Which material is suitable for these baby mattresses?

The range of baby mattresses is extremely diverse. As with adults, there are different materials. An inexpensive and widely used variant is a model with a foam core made of polyurethane. Mattresses with a pocket spring core system are also often purchased. They adapt well to the child’s body, are breathable and stable. However, spring core models are not very suitable for children with allergies. If your child is prone to allergies, you should choose a latex version. These have the advantage that they are dust-free and therefore very hygienic. A further advantage is a heat-insulating effect.

The lying comfort is excellent. In order to prevent small children from sinking too deeply into the mattress, you should choose a harder material. Firmer and even more elastic are latex materials that are mixed with coconut fibers. Some models have a coconut and a latex side. For many parents, naturalness is trumps.

Baby mattresses made of hemp, linen, or wool ensure a good exchange of moisture. However, the point load is only moderately pronounced and the models require a lot of care. Cold foam mattresses with a polyurethane core provide a calm and safe sleeping position and are heat-insulating. The layered structure with its air channels and chambers allows moisture exchange and optimal ventilation.

The first baby mattresses are inserts for the bassinet or cot. As children grow rapidly, they need different mattresses in the first years of life. The following sizes are available:

The height of mattresses for the cot is between ten and twenty centimeters. Thinner models are suitable for the first year of life, if the child becomes heavier, you should use a thicker mattress.
